BRENDAN CASS

“I don’t really paint accurately,” says New York artist Brendan Cass. “I just use suggestions of images as an excuse to paint.” Brendan Cass (b. 1974 in New Jersey, USA) produce artworks that blur the line between abstraction and figuraton. His abstract compositions suggest landscapes solely through elements of gesture and the color palette Cass adopts often has little to do with nature. Pepto-Bismol-like pinks and acidic greens stand in for mountains, fields, and architectural elements, all of which are rendered in a variety of brush strokes, spills, and smears that recall the energy of Action Painting. Combining found imagery—such as low-quality tourist photos—and the imagination, he transforms these scenes through a painting style that is equal parts meditative and exuberantly performative. He currently lives and works in New York City.
